Redisplaying Ancient Egypt at National Museums Scotland
200 years after the first objects entered the collection in 1819, the ancient Egypt gallery at the National Museum of Scotland reopened in February 2019. This talk will discuss the curatorial approach in planning and designing the new gallery. The 'Ancient Egypt Rediscovered' gallery presents the remarkable breadth of ancient Egyptian history, highlighting Egypt’s interactions with other ancient peoples, as well as the stories of individuals, to give a sense of their personal lives. The gallery also examines the archaeologists and collectors who brought the objects to Scotland and contributed to the development of Egyptology. It will share highlights from the collection and display, discussing how they are presented in the displays and how they reflect the aims of the redisplay.
Dr Dan Potter is Assistant Curator for Ancient Mediterranean and Africa at National Museums Scotland. He joined the Museum in 2016 to develop the 'Ancient Egypt Rediscovered' gallery which opened in 2019. He has since curated the National Museum Scotland touring exhibition 'Discovering Ancient Egypt' and completed a collections review of Egyptian material in Scottish museums in 2020. In 2022 he was awarded an AHRC research, development and engagement fellowship to study how archaeologists involved in British-led excavations engaged in the antiquities trade. This project was partnered with The Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology, The Egypt Exploration Society and The World Museum, Liverpool. His previous research has included Ramesside language, prospography, and the representation of ancient Egypt in comic books.
