Abstract
The LCANE lecture will discuss results from the multi-disciplinary investigation of an Early Bronze Age cemetery in the province of Siirt, southeastern Türkiye. The cemetery of Başur Höyük presents evidence of grand funerary rituals—including ‘retainer burials’ and spectacular deposits of metallic wealth—in an otherwise small-scale, egalitarian setting. More puzzling still, there is a preponderance of teenagers in the richest tombs. An interpretation is proposed, incorporating the results of ancient DNA analysis and considering wider implications for the study of early state formation.
