Lecture by Glenn Schwartz on Kurd Qaburstan

Glenn Schwartz has been responsible for some of the most exciting excavations of the last 30 years. His most recent project involves work at the site of Kurd Qaburstan in the Kurdish zone of northern Iraq near Erbil.

Title

“Urbanism in Second Millennium BC Northern Mesopotamia: Recent Results from Kurd Qaburstan (Ancient Qabra)”.

Abstract

Archaeological fieldwork at Kurd Qaburstan on the Erbil plain in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq since 2013 has focused on the study of a north Mesopotamian 2^nd millennium BC urban center.  Of particular interest is the site’s foundation and florescence in the Middle Bronze era ca. 1900-1700 BC, when it was a walled metropolis encompassing ca. 100 hectares.  Excavation and geophysical survey have produced new insights on the nature of this Middle Bronze city, including exploration of public and domestic quarters and the recovery of written records illuminating the site’s ancient identity and historical context.
